Introducing

Children with Autism are seldom considered students. They are defined as a problem. What is the problem with your child? - This is the opening statement that a parent faces in any conversation about his/her child. Exclusion is high. Parental denial of diagnosis is also high due to rampant and pervasive stigmatizing.

India does not have a separate Autism Act. Autism was recognized for the first time as a 'disability', through “The Persons with Disability Act, 2016.” As a society understanding of this developmental condition is dictated by the stereotypes of an abnormal child and is often thrown at the affected population as a slur. The Autistic Student Newsletter will bring you stories, articles, strategies with a 360-degree view: Education, Therapies, New Scientific Findings, Parental Stress, Transitioning to teenage and adulthood, Struggles, Achievements, Hope. Plus you get a weekly round-up of Autism-related news from India. At the heart of all content is the autistic child and the belief that beneath the shell of autism is a student waiting to manifest his talent.

About Me

I have spent 25 years in journalism carving a niche in the coverage of financial, tech and infrastructure sectors. I own two industry leading magazines, TelecomLive and InfraLive and web news portals of the same label. I authored, ‘E-Com in India-Violations & Tax avoidance’, it became the go-to-book to understand business structures of e-com companies in India. I stumbled into the A-world when my son got his autism diagnosis at the age of 2.8 years. It has been a roller coaster ride with many explorations and discovery of the unknowns. My son Suhrid, who is 18 now is an autistic teen artist. As a Mom, autism is my personal context; I live with it and embrace it each day. I chair Mahagauri Autism Care Pvt. Ltd which is devoted to creating assets for the autistic community in India. Also as a public purpose initiative, I started AuTypical.in, an online publishing platform for autistic artists in India. So far we have showcased 25 artists and 279 artworks. Last year (mid-2023), my dream project for Autism Education, Higashi Autism School (HAS) opened to an awesome response, drawing enormous interest in the quality education that we provide. Looking forward to sharing many insights, practices and methods.
